Our journey at Prairie Rose Alpacas began when we moved from the city of Springfield to our current property in 2002. We began looking at uses for our newfound acreage almost immediately but jobs, commutes, and children (who had busy calendars of their own) occupied much of our time and, unfortunately, put some of our plans on hold. But as our daughters grew up, finished college and left the nest, we began looking in earnest for a way to use the piece of land we had come to call home. It was in 2011 that we visited a local farm during “National Alpaca Days.” As we drove home that day, Jim suggested we raise alpacas since they are eco-friendly, sustainable, "don’t cluck and you don’t have to milk them”. Prairie Rose Alpacas was born that fateful September afternoon and we haven't looked back since!

We began with a small herd of foundation females purchased from our friends and mentors Bart and Rhonda Leinberger at Alpacas of Indian Point Hills. The next year saw the birth of our first crop of cria, expansion of our foundation herd, and a third business partner (Barb's older brother Bruce) who joined in our adventure. We continued to educate ourselves about these wonderful creatures and the more we learned about alpacas(from other breeders, educational seminars, and good old fashioned hands on experience) the more we became invested in helping to advance the alpaca industry. We next took steps to enlarge our own herd with quality stock from leading North American breeders like Snowmass Alpacas and Crescent Moon Ranch. Currently, we are fortunate enough to co-own top quality ribbon winning herdsires with both of these farms in addition to our own herdisires.

Just over 5 years into our journey, we are confident in our farm's ability to provide both high quality stud services and amiable animals for fiber enthusiasts and 4-H clubs alike. Take a look around our site and feel free to contact us with any questions regarding the alpacas you see there. We love to chat with current alpaca owners, future alpaca owners, or just anyone interested in alpacas! However, due to insurance considerations we are not open to the public for tours.

We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28
